the economy very happy to hear that. we saw a better-than-expected rise in retail sales in december up .5% overall from the month of november. that was better than expected given all the stress regarding the "fiscal cliff" threats and when you lock at the best performing category cars and trucks, 1.6% up overall in 2012 the best year for auto sales since 2007. the numbers overall would have been even better if you strip out a 1.6% decline in the price of gas. now, when it comes to that decline in gas prices, that led to lower inflation on wholesale side of the equation. the producer price index fell two-tenths of a percent last month from the month before. overall, wholesale side inflation in 2012 up only 1.3%. that compared to a 4.7% inacross in 2011 falling gas prices certainly helping out at the end of the year. stock market coming off a mixed day and looking at a lower open this morning. continuing concern over techs including apple and iphone 5 demand in the holiday quarter. a look at the big board the dow is down 2

a couple years ago when the economy was really fragile, one of the ways to stimulate the economy was to lower the payroll tax for employees. so it went from 6.2% of your earnings down to 4.2%. that was awesome. it helped you get a little bit more money in your paycheck right? unfortunately, sadly now we're back at 6.2%. it was not extended as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations. >> it's interesting the footlocker chief executive, ken hicks, said that this payroll tax increase actually takes money out of the pockets of consumers. and so how do you think in general, what are economists saying about how it may affect consumer spending? >> a lot of the economists i talk to all the time were up in arms about this because they think that this payroll tax cut was a great form of stimulus. and now the resumption of that 6.2% number means we're probably going shave about a half a percent off our growth rate this year. you think, oh a half a percent, not a big deal. we're only growing by 2% a year so it is a big deal. >> in the beginning when you said between $18 and $20 less a week, it does

. >> reporter: we have some good news on the economy this morning. starting out with a labor department report that first time weekly unemployment claims fell by 37,000 to 335,000. lowest point in five years. four-week average down to 3359,000 meaning there's more hiring than firing. january is tough to figure out because of temporary holiday jobs that tend to go away at this time but this might indicate that some retailers are holding on to some of those employees a little longer perhaps even permanently. also good news on the housing market which just continues its recovery. commerce department reporting that housing starts in december were up over 900,000, more than 12% increase from the month before. and overall in 2012 up about 28% over the starts that we saw in 2011. prices are also on the increase and we're seeing fewer foreclosures. earnings are starting to roll in for the 4th quarter and ebay posted a nice quarter topping earning expectations thanks to big gains in its paypal unit. revenue came in just at about $4 billion. and ebay shares we

it would be a self-inflicted wound on the economy. it would slow down our growth, might tip us into recession, and ironically, would probably increase our deficit. so, to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the united states of america not paying its bills is irresponsible. it's absurd. as the speaker said two years ago, it would be, and i'm quoting speaker boehner now, "a financial disaster" not only for us but for the worldwide economy. so, we've got to pay our bills, and republicans in congress have two choices here. they can act responsibly and pay america's bills or they can act irresponsibly and put america through another economic crisis. but they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the american economy. the financial wellbeing of the american people is not leveraged to be used. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. and they'd better choose quickly because time is running short. the last time republicans in congress even flirted with this idea, our aaa c
